During the winter of 1924–1925, the worst food-borne illness to date in the US occurred because of improper handling of oysters. This produced a typhoid fever epidemic, and food-borne illness outbreaks gained national attention. Unfortunately, it was not until 1969 that the FDA began sanitization programs specifically for shellfish and milk, and began its focus and implementation on the food service industry as a whole. Recognition of food safety issues and attempts to address them began after Upton Sinclair published the novel The Jungle in 1906. It was a fictional account of the lives of immigrants in the industrial cities in the US around this time. Sinclair spent nine months undercover as an employee in a Chicago meat plant doing research.
Key Findings and Conclusions A literature review showed that, in most cases, microwaves can be an attractive alternative method to conventional food processing methods in terms of its nutritional quality, mainly due to shorter processing time. Microwaved food is also safe if it is heated in packaging intended for this purpose, and the microwave ovens do not pose a threat to human surroundings. The results of this article may help form targeted educational strategies to mitigate the inappropriate consumer beliefs about the use of microwaves within the food industry. Modern packaging materials have been developed to protect foods and enhance their shelf life. Nevertheless, some interactions between the packaging material, food, and its surrounding environment may alter the sanitary, nutritional, and sensory characteristics of foods, and eventually, could make them unsuitable for human consumption.

A simple and rapid method using GC-MS and GC-FPD for the determination of pesticide contamination in processed food has been developed. Pesticides were extracted from a sample with ethyl acetate in the presence of anhydrous sodium sulfate, then cleaned up with a combination of mini-columns, such as macroporous diatomaceous earth, C18, GCB and PSA. This method can be used to judge whether or not processed foods are contaminated with pesticides at potentially harmful levels.

Studies were undertaken to determine the composition of five different types of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate feedstreams to ascertain the relative amounts of food containers and non-food containers. Deposit post-consumer PET feedstreams contained approximately 100% food containers, whereas curbside feedstreams contained from 0.04 to 6% non-food containers. A total of 121 compounds were identified in the five different feedstreams. The concentration of absorbed compounds remaining in the deposit material and the non-food applications material after the commercial wash was 28 and 39mgkg(-1) respectively.
